What if i told you there is a mindset shift that can totally eliminate fear in today's video i want to show you a personal story of how i managed to turn insurmountable fear into a feeling of accomplishment and what did i do in the past week to deal with one of the biggest fears that i developed in my life let's get to it.
I am the ceo of Selfmastered which is a high performance training company we help entrepreneurs and business leaders and scale their businesses by teaching them eight core high performance skills that allow them to operate at peak potential when managing their businesses.
So today i want to discuss how to deal with fear because if you are building big things if you're trying difficult stuff it is very normal to have strong emotions one of which can be fear you can develop fear of the unknown fear of a lack of clarity fear of a lack of certainty on the path ahead
and it doesn't really matter who you are what level you're operating at or what it is that you do for your living we all face fear what counts obviously is to overcome that fear what counts is to summon the courage to do whatever it is that we need to do without minding being fearful about it but in my life i have developed a mindset that i believe is very useful and it proved useful last week when i went back to the mountains so picture this 15 year old liam so nearly 20 years ago was a somewhat good skier i was able to go down red and black fists with a fair amount of confidence
right and then i decided when i was 15 that i wanted to try my luck in snowboarding and the first time i tried it it went well but then the second time i tried it and i went into a black piste as a new lament to the snowboarder after a few years being a good skier i broke my wrist specifically my right wrist and i could not move it for three months with of course since i'm right-handed had a massive impact in my academic performance right because i had to write with my left hand and it was just a mess and the problem is that i developed such a strong fear towards skiing and snowboarding and really going very fast speed
in the mountains that i just stopped doing any winter sports i never came back to the mountains for skiing or snowboarding or doing anything it was totally out of question that i would risk another injury like this one in fact it also happened to me the same thing when i went to vietnam and i spent a few weeks traveling there by motorcycle and i had a massive accident and i broke my other wrist the left one in exactly the same way as i have broken my right wrist and i also developed a fear of a motorcycle so over the years as i understood that there was absolutely no question in being afraid of motorcycles i kept pushing myself to go back to ride motorcycles and i overcame that fear but i never went back to the mountains until last week last week as part of a think week that i like to take at the beginning of each year i went to the pyrenees to a small country called andorra which i like a lot because that's probably when i do my best thinking it is isolated landlocked only 70 000 people leave the um and it's home to normal the biggest station in the south of europe called ramalita
but also a few minor stations ski stations that i've discovered this year and i liked a lot because i've gone to honduras several times but never to skiing so this year i decided that it was time to face that fear which is the last fear that i thought was still lingering my mind and i did it i was able to go down a blackfist again after 15 after 18 years without skiing for the first time and how did i manage to pull this off what was the key mindset that i used well over the years i have developed this mindset in which there are no situations that i deserve to be afraid of there are only hard or difficult situations that i need to learn how to manage because everything is manageable the key mindset that have allowed me to go back to skiing and go down all of those fists at 40 or 50 or 60 kilometers per hour risking an injury again but having complete security and control over my performance after so many years is that i am not afraid of things when they are hard or difficult because
i have learned that the best thing you can do is to learn how to manage them or see them as challenges a situation that need to be managed not fear because everything is manageable the key idea is that you need to know the rules of the thing that you are willing to manage so every time you are afraid about something ask yourself one have you done it before because if you have done it before you have very valuable data that you can use to assess your performance in my case when i came back to that black best i have gone down those black pests 18 years ago several times in ski and then snowboard at least i went down a few hundred meters before i broke i broke my wrist
so i knew what good skiing looked like i knew what risks were involved and i knew how to navigate that i just haven't done it haven't managed that for 18 years so i had a mental picture of what a great performance excellent performance looked like so that's the first thing if you have done it before assess self-assess your performance that's idea number one and if you've never done it before because sometimes we're afraid of the unknown of the uncertain of those things that we have never encountered before you need to ask yourself do i know the rules of this game do i know the rules of the environment and if the answer is yes even though you've never done it then just go do it you have at least some data on how to best navigate this situation
so i really leave you with this idea it is extremely important never be afraid of things always seek to manage those things that you might be afraid of in the beginning because everything is manageable the difference is knowing what are the key levels that you need to pull in order to manage it
so i really hope this is useful to you it's been massively useful for me in the past i encourage you to see everything around you as situations to be managed in which sometimes you don't you know the rules and sometimes you don't if you know the rules then play if you don't know the rules learn the rules and then play but never get stuck because you are afraid that's what high performance do i hope this was useful please let me know in the comments how do you manage fear normally and of course if you want to prove a framework on how to really rethink your performance so that you have predictable and reliable high performance results apply for the submaster performance access your program will be delighted to diagnose your situation and if it makes sense on board you and help you skill your company or your career by transforming your personal performance.
