This Mental Model is The Starting Point of High Performance
Summary
In this video, I discuss the mental model from which all high performance stems. Without understanding it and making the right choice at every crossroads, operating at peak performance is impossible.

There's one fundamental mistake
most entrepreneurs make when approaching their
daily work. And that's preventing them from
growing.
Hello, everyone, Leon Castillo here, I'm CEO and
Founder of Selfmastered. And today I want to
discuss what's the foundational mental model of
high performance, if you get this wrong, there's
no possibility of building anything high
performance. But if you get this right, that's
when fun starts. That's when prioritization
naturally comes down when you start extracting
asymmetric outputs per each unit of input that you
put in your entrepreneurial machine. And, in my
view, nothing is as important as really
understanding: What is this? How does it work? And
Why does it matter? And that mental model is
Efficiency versus Effectiveness. So efficiency is
doing right everything that you do is about being
as economic as possible in each effort, and
investment that you do in each process, right?
It's about getting everything right is about
shooting, right every shot. And that may seem like
a good place to start, right? Who wouldn't be
willing to do well, to the best of his ability
each and everything that he tackles? Well, the
problem is that this disregards the nature of
leverage: The universe follows power laws, some
things have a tremendous impact on the reality
around you and others are just insignificant. So
by devoting the same amount of mental energy and
focus to everything, you're wasting a lot of
potential without you even realizing it. And the
other mental model then the one that actually
takes into account the heterogeneous reality you
live in is Effectiveness. Effectiveness is about
shooting, right, only the right shot, only the
things that matter only the things that bring the
most bang for your buck, in terms of results. So
efficiency versus effectiveness. Once you
understand that everything you do can be looked
through this lens, everything changes, because
that's when you graduate from the lowest level of
performance training, to the highest levels. From
being an average performer, to being a top
performer. And now, I want you to think about what
you have been hearing during your life probably
about how to become more productive, how to become
more effective, how to be a top performer, chances
are that most of the advice you've been given has
been related to Time Management, That's level one
of performance optimization. Time management is
problematic in itself, because it's all about
efficiency is all about time batching your tasks
and making sure that you do not go overboard in
terms of time, so you don't really devote too much
time to some things. But it still equates all
tasks, it still implies at all hours are created
equal and therefore has an effectiveness problem.
It's very hard to be effective if you are working
based on time management tips. Once you understand
that you are a biological entities that you cannot
perform at your best for 12 hours every day.
That's when you graduate to energy management.
That's level two. Energy management is when you
finally understand that you follow the ebbs and
flows of nature when going about your day.
Specifically, I want to discuss what in Ultradian
rhythms, which are "Ultra-dia". Within the day,
that cycles of 90 to 120 minutes, in which you go
from a high level of focus and stress too low
level of stress and therefore high level of
recovery. And that's how you perform during the
day through ebbs and flows. So you need to make
sure that you work that you protect your highest
energy hours so you do not waste them on things
that don't matter. But when you finally
incorporate the effectiveness mental model, you
understand that the highest leverage can be found
when working to the peak of your ability at the
highest energy level on the most important task.
So it's not only about time managing your time and
making sure that you devote enough time to the
task. It's not only about making sure that you are
in your Prime of the day, so you're actually have
the energy to perform your best work. It's also
about making sure that you're working on the
highest leverage tasks, at all points. And this is
when priority management becomes more important
than energy and time management. When you manage
your priorities in a way that you're always
working on the most important thing at the highest
energy level, things start falling into place much
more easily, you make progress that quickly
becomes exponential, you compound your results in
a way that you achieve a lot more in a lot less
time. And that's the secret behind top performing
entrepreneurs, that they do a few things, but they
do them so well, that they have exponential
returns on their time, attention and capital
invested. So I leave you with this idea. And
please let me know in the comments, how does this
mental model apply to you? And how do you believe
it will help you going forward? If you focus on
being effective instead of efficient that is of
only shooting right the right shot instead of
shooting right every shot, you will have a lot
more impact than you previously had. That's when
you graduate from time management to energy
management to finally leverage management.
Let me know how does this apply to you? How do you
feel you can incorporate your daily life? I'll be
more than happy to respond to any comment. And of
course, if you want to become part of the Selfmast
red Community and go through our perform
nce accelerator, I'll be happy to have a one on
one consult call and see if we can indeed help
ou. See you in the next video.
